Laptop Prices in 2027: Why Korea's Computer CPI Is Up 27%
If you planned to replace a laptop this winter, the question is probably whether to buy now or wait for 2027. Korea's consumer price index offers a blunt starting point: in September 2026 the "computers" item was 27.4% higher than a year earlier.
This piece answers the timing question with numbers rather than instinct. A laptop's price ultimately follows the price of the memory inside it, so the path of memory contract prices tells you most of what you need to know.
Three points up front
• Korea's computer CPI rose 27.4% year on year in September, more than nine times the 2.9% headline rate.
• Memory's share of PC cost roughly doubled in a year: 16% to 23% by Gartner's estimate, and 35% by HP's own account.
• Forecasts for when memory prices turn range from mid-2027 to 2028, and NAND (SSDs) is likely to ease before DRAM.

What is confirmed and what is not
Confirmed: September computer CPI +27.4% and headline CPI +2.9% (Statistics Korea, reported October 2, 2026). Mobile phones rose 8.3%.
Confirmed: Micron said on September 30, 2026 that supply and demand will be "much tighter in CY2027 and 2028 than 2026", and that PC and smartphone units could fall by double digits.
Company plan: Micron's Idaho ID1 fab is scheduled for first wafer output in mid-2027; Hiroshima and Idaho ID2 follow in late 2028.
Reported: Acer's CEO expects PC prices to rise another 5% to 20% in the fourth quarter, stabilise in early 2027 and fall after mid-2027 (DigiTimes via Notebookcheck, September 23, 2026).
Not verified: a figure of "PC DRAM up 13-18% in 4Q26" circulates online, but TrendForce's public release gives no PC DRAM number, only that the increase will slow from the prior quarter.
Why laptop prices follow memory

By TrendForce's count, conventional DRAM contract prices rose 93% to 98% in the first quarter of 2026 alone. Increases have slowed to the low teens since the third quarter, but slower increases are still increases. The level keeps climbing. (The 2Q26 and 3Q26 bars are start-of-quarter forecasts.)

Gartner puts memory at 16% of PC bill of materials in 2025 and 23% in 2026. TrendForce estimated notebook memory share rising from about 15% to over 30% in 1Q26. HP told investors that memory now accounts for 35% of its PC cost. The bases differ, but the direction is the same.
When a third of the cost doubles in a year, manufacturers cannot absorb it in margin. Increases arrive in instalments: Dell and Lenovo in December 2025, ASUS in January, Acer in March, HP and Dell again in the second quarter. IDC expects 2026 PC units to fall 11.3% while market value rises 1.6%. Price is doing the work that volume used to do.
When does it turn: NAND first, DRAM later

The forecasts look contradictory until you split them by product. TrendForce expects NAND supply and demand to swing to surplus in the second half of 2027. For DRAM it expects the gap to widen in 2027, and Micron says 2027 and 2028 will be tighter than this year. Acer's view of falling prices after mid-2027 is the most optimistic, and a PC maker has an obvious interest in prices falling. The chart maps each source's wording onto quarters and is not a precise forecast.
The practical implication: storage-heavy products are likely to ease first, while DRAM-heavy laptops and phones respond later.
What to watch
| Indicator | Why it matters |
| TrendForce 1Q27 contract forecast | A single-digit increase would be the first signal |
| Korea computer CPI | The month the YoY rate turns down marks the likely retail peak |
| New fab first-wafer dates | Micron ID1 mid-2027; SK hynix Yongin tool move-in Feb 2027 (reported) |
| PC shipments | IDC sees 4Q26 units down 20% YoY; weak demand could break prices first |
Risks to this view
• A correction in AI server spending could loosen memory supply sooner than forecast.
• If consumer demand collapses under higher prices, suppliers could shift more output to PCs and phones.
• Forecasts move fast. TrendForce's 1Q26 DRAM forecast went from 55-60% to 90-95% in a month.
Where this ends
If you need a laptop now for work or study, reported fourth-quarter increases give little reason to wait. If you can wait, the 1Q27 contract price forecast and the direction of computer CPI are the two numbers to check before deciding. Neither guarantees a lower price.
Next: a step inside the factory, following a semiconductor fab's day using public sources.
