Korea's Chip Jobs in 2027: SK hynix Hiring Up 4.3x, and Where Each Major Leads
A long memory upcycle has brought a wave of hiring news from Korea's chipmakers. One number makes it concrete: SK hynix hired 739 new graduates in 2023 and 3,201 in 2025.
This piece maps the path into Korea's semiconductor industry for 2027 using only published hiring data and the government's workforce outlook: how many are hired, where they come from, and which roles each academic major leads to.
Three points up front
• SK hynix's new-graduate hiring went from 739 in 2023 to 3,201 in 2025, roughly 4.3 times in two years.
• An industry outlook cited by the government puts Korea's chip workforce at 177,000 in 2021 and the requirement at 304,000 by 2031, an increase of 127,000.
• In SK hynix's published list of majors by job family, electrical and electronic engineering appears in eight of nine families.

What is confirmed and what is not
Confirmed: SK hynix new hires of 739, 942 and 3,201 for 2023 to 2025 (Financial News, July 30, 2026). The full-year 2026 figure has not been disclosed.
Confirmed: SK hynix's second-half 2026 recruitment (applications August 20-26) dropped the personal essay and age and education limits, and replaced short interviews with half-day assessments.
Company plan: Samsung plans to hire 60,000 people over five years, about 12,000 a year, focused on semiconductors, components, biotech and AI (announced September 2025).
Reported: hiring-linked semiconductor degree programmes total 550 places in the 2026 academic year: 440 at eight Samsung-linked universities and 110 at three SK hynix-linked ones (author's sum from Ministry of Education data reported by Hankook Ilbo).
Not verified: a "54,000 shortfall by 2031" figure circulates in Korean media, attributed to different agencies. It is a different number from the 127,000 increase and should not be mixed with it.
How many: hiring follows the cycle

On the back of that outlook, the government set a goal in 2022 of training more than 150,000 people over ten years. The same material noted that chipmakers hire about 10,000 new people a year while related departments graduate about 5,000.
Hiring does not rise in a straight line. SK hynix's 739 in 2023 is a downturn number; its 3,201 in 2025 is an upcycle number. Semiconductor hiring trails the memory cycle by a few quarters.
Where from: sponsored degrees and specialised universities

The most direct route is a sponsored programme with guaranteed hiring. Samsung partners with KAIST and Yonsei (100 places each), Sungkyunkwan (70) and five others; SK hynix with Korea University and Hanyang (40 each) and Sogang (30). Of 796 places in all hiring-linked programmes, 65.3% are in the Seoul metropolitan area. The education ministry had also designated 17 semiconductor-specialised universities by 2024.
Which roles: majors to job families

Electrical engineering runs across nearly every family. Materials, chemistry, chemical engineering and physics lead to device and process roles; mechanical engineering to manufacturing technology and facilities; industrial engineering and statistics to quality, product engineering and IT; computer science to design, application engineering and IT. Samsung's DS division careers pages point the same way. Job titles differ between companies, which is the subject of the next piece.
What it means for investors
| Indicator | What it signals | When |
| New-graduate hiring | Confidence in the cycle | Annual reports |
| Sponsored programme places | Medium-term demand | Each academic year |
| Recruitment rounds | Near-term intent | First and second half |
Hiring is the shadow of capacity expansion: a new fab needs people before it needs wafers. Whether SK hynix holds near its 2025 level in 2026 is an indirect read on how durable management thinks the upcycle is.
Risks to this view
• A memory downturn cuts hiring quickly, as 2023 showed.
• Automation and AI may change the mix of people needed per unit of output.
• The 2031 requirement dates from 2022 and does not reflect later changes in the cycle.
Next: process, equipment and device engineers, and why the same title means different things at different companies.
